Santa Rosa. Snoopy, spineless prickly pears and no rain.

We are sitting in a coffee house in old town Santa Rosa having supper and using the internet access. We spent the day passing through the rest of the Redwood Forest then drove inland through some of the California wine region. The grape vines are turning yellow and in some cases, red, and the hillsides are covered with their orderly rows. The rest of the countryside is brown.

We stopped off at the tourist information bureau where two women competed for who has the best answer to our questions. We came out fully informed! Santa Rosa is experiencing the California drought. Their area is rated severe. The temperature reached 28 degrees today and is at least 10 degrees warmer than normal. There is no sign of rain.
Santa Rosa is an agricultural and wine region and has two former citizens of note. Charles Schultz lived here for the latter part of his life and a museum with all his memorabilia is here. Snoopy lives outside the restaurant we are eating in. Luther Burbank is the other famous resident. He died in 1926 but his work in developing plants affect gardeners today. Five of his more famous varieties are shasta daisies, santa rosa plums, rainbow chard, elephant garlic and spineless prickly pear cactus. There are 800,995 others!! If I can remember his name, I'll be thinking of him next summer as I enjoy his hard work and patience!

We are spending the night here then travelling to San Francisco tomorrow where we plan to stay for a few days (depending on weather).
